“I’m Sorry….but I am Not”
This might sound like an odd phrase to begin a devotional but I find it being used more and more. Last night we were at the Choir Concert for the High School. This was a LOOOOOONG (you get the idea) concert. So near the end one of the choir teachers got to say they were sorry it was so long and then right after that talked about how they really weren’t sorry that it was so long and went on to explain the reasons for the length. I commented this to Jill when we got home last night and then started thinking about other times and places I have heard the same thing. People saying they are sorry only to continue to justify why they did what they did so they really aren’t sorry.
I wonder if the people in the time of Malachi were doing the same thing. Perhaps they were telling God sorry, but with their actions they didn’t mean it. They were sorry only to give another excuse why what they were doing was okay. This past Sunday it was in their giving and serving. I imagine they had all sorts of reasons for not giving and serving. They might have even felt sorry after they read the words of Malachi. But nothing is ever written about a change. They weren’t sorry at all.
Are we the same way? We read scripture that tells us God owns everything and we know it is true. We also know we don’t live as if God owns everything. So are we sorry we are not obeying God or just sorry for a moment only to do the same thing and make excuses for why it is okay for us to do whatever we want. This is not true repentance. Repentance is humbling ourselves and realizing we are wrong and asking God to forgive us.
So let’s stop following this false and phony method of repentance and let’s start humbling ourselves and asking God to forgive us when we sin.
